I had to opportunity to document the beautiful collaboration between Mollie Code of Studio Code  and Parachute Home here in Chicago. The shoot featured lovely kitchen and bath linens as well as bedding from Parachute home, through Mollie’s gorgeous renovated Wicker Park town home.

Film diaries | Feb + March

I have wanted to shoot film since I began my photography career in 2010. I loved the look and feel of film, and I especially admired the art form. Such intentionality is required for each image, it is a craft that really pushes you out of your comfort zone and seemingly forces you to become a better artist because you can’t just double check your image in your view finder.

At one point, in 2012, I did pick up film. I bought a Nikon F100 (a 35mm film camera that fit my current digital lenses), and shot a couple of rolls on it. But soon after, whether due to fear or lack of practicality, or general busyness with my other business tasks, I put it away. I don’t really remember why. And I always longed to pick it back up.

This year, I finally did. Shooting film has been such a freeing process. It’s not perfect. In fact, it’s far from perfect, and I think that is what makes it interesting. I never know what I will get, especially now that I am in the learning phase. Each set of scans I get back from the lab is exciting because I truthfully have forgotten what images I have taken, and I also have no idea what they will look like.

It has been so rewarding to practice a craft I had previously hindered myself from because of fear. Because, you know what? Fear doesn’t accomplish anything. You don’t know what you could be missing out on. You don’t know what mistakes you might make, but you also don’t know what successes or what you might learn along the way. Right now, I am using film to shoot for myself again. It’s mostly images at home (clearly, this was February and March and we did not have a lot of places to go), of my kids, and food, but these images have so much depth to them that I am not used to seeing in my digital images. I do absolutely hope to eventually be at the point to incorporate film into some of my paid client work, but for now, I am having so much fun exploring and making mistakes with something that feels really exciting.

Why I love in home family sessions

In case you hadn’t noticed around here, I’ve gotten really into in home family portraits.

For me, they just makes sense. They mesh the parts that really matter to me in life: family, space, story.

They feel authentic and beautiful and I love seeing the way these pieces come together to tell your family’s own narrative. If you have been on the fence about whether you should have an in home family session or something outdoors, here are a few reasons why in home sessions are my absolute favorite!

And before you tell me your home is not photo worthy…trust me, we make it work. Besides, all you really need is one good window ;)

        1. I believe that family and the space you have created to inhabit are deeply personal. The two intertwined tell the most beautiful story of your life. I want to celebrate YOUR story. The one you work so hard day in and day out to create. The one where messes and fights happen, but where make ups and kitchen dances also do. This is your home. It’s where the love happens. I want to be there documenting all of that for you to look back on and see in years to come, and say, wow….we really made a pretty amazing life together.

        2. They are unique. After all, isn’t your family unlike anyone else’s? I mean, really…why should your photos look like any other family when you have your own vibrant, unique story happening right under your roof every day?

        3. Your kids have a chance to act like themselves and be kids for their photos. And that is what I am after. I really am not after cheesy family photos. There. I said it. I don’t want everyone looking perfect, because that’s not what real life is! Sure, I will always get that framer photo for grandma, and you, because…posterity. But let’s celebrate together the crazy season you’re in! Your kids are kids, they love to paint on themselves and run through sprinklers and play, don’t you want to remember those beautiful moments? I know I do!

I hope I’ve given you something to think about with in home family portraits. Yeah, I’m kinda into them :) Let me know if you have any questions! And if you’re interested in booking a session, email me here. Can’t wait to hear from you!
