wander // our West Coast road trip Part 1: Cannon Beach through San Francisco

Cannon Beach Oregon and Northern California San Francisco Travel Photography by Jasmine Pulley wildlyspun.com -1

Driving down the California coast was something I had dreamt about doing since college. With our time in the Pacific Northwest quickly coming to a close, it was seeming less and less likely that we’d ever do it. I mean, I figured simply being on the west coast would have made this thing more possible.

But then Jason mentioned wanting to dip down to Albuquerque, New Mexico to visit our old friends on our drive back to Illinois. And I kind of have this habit of asking a mile when Jason gives an inch.

eats // roasted carrot + shaved apple salad from dolly&oatmeal blog

roasted carrots + shaved apple salad recipe from dollyandoatmeal blog photos by Jasmine Pulley for wildlyspun.com -1

Carrots are one of those vegetables that I have been meaning to roast for some time. All my favorite food bloggers are doing it, and naturally, as a food photographer, I am in love with their gorgeous warm hues. And I love the taste of carrots!

But for some reason, when it comes to cooking my veggies, carrots just get put on the back burner. I pretty much resort to eating them with hummus, how boring!

When I have the option of brussel sprouts, asparagus, broccoli…those just always seem to come first.

Then, I stumbled across Lindsey Love’s blog, dolly & oatmeal…honestly, don’t know how I didn’t find it sooner! She has amazing gluten + dairy free recipes that are chock full of veggies, annnnd seriously stunning photography, so I easily spent a couple hours scouring the blog to see what I could see.

Her roasted carrot salad really intrigued me. Sliced apples? drizzles in freshly squeezed orange juice? Um, hello….yes please.

      Chicago locale // Humboldt House

I’m so excited to share these photos + interview with shop owner of Humboldt House, Claire Tibbs!

I first discovered this absolutely perfect vintage shop in the same way that I find out about almost everything that’s cool, instagram.  Jason and I had finalized our lease on our Chicago apartment but it was still a month until we’d be in our new home in Humboldt Park, Chicago. Now, we knew that Humboldt Park was not going to be the hippest neighborhood we could have picked, but we were still really okay with that. In fact, we kind of liked that. We knew we’d be minutes from all the cool restaurants, bars, and shops, but also have a more quiet neighborhood feel, with a strong sense of community from all the families in Humboldt. And hey, the Humboldt price tag didn’t hurt either :)

Buuuuuut, all that to say…everyone wants their neighborhood to be a liiiittle cool…right?

So imagine my surprise when one day, during our month long wait to get to Chicago, I trolled the hashtag #humboldtpark on instagram (you know, just to see what’s up…that’s totally normal, right?) and found this drool worthy shop.

I honestly thought to myself….no, that must not be right. Well, with a name like Humboldt House, I figured it had to be! Naturally, this find made me even more excited to be in my new neighborhood. A gorgeous, perfectly curated vintage shop with loads of midcentury furniture just walking distance from my new apartment? Yes.

So after thoroughly stalking the shop and Claire on instagram, seriously check out their account…it’s so good, I knew I wanted to not only check out the space and meet her, but also share the goodness with you all.

And bonus for us, within days of our arrival in Chicago, Humboldt House had an incredible sale and we scored two amazing pieces for our apartment. To be shared, ya’ll…since they are both in rooms that I would deem “not yet ready for blogging.”

Enjoy the interview + photos below!

wander // Big Four Ice Caves

Big Four Ice Caves Washington Pacific NorthWest Photography Jasmine Pulley Wildlyspun.com-1

Now…I would exactly say I am having Pacific Northwest withdrawal…but my sister did text me yesterday to say that when they drove past our old apartment, my three years old nephew said, “Mommy let’s go to Masi’s “(What he calls me) house.”

I pretty much burst into tears right then and there. Ask Jason.

I have to remember that living in Washington was a gift. It was just a special time for a special season, and oh yeah…it’s just a plane ride away.

And don’t get me wrong. I’m thrilled to be in Chicago. But we don’t have ice caves. Nope. We don’t have those.

        “Sunday Suppers” book review

Karen Mordechai’s book Sunday Suppers is really unlike any other cookbook I have owned.

With section titles like camping, city picnic, and upstate with friends, she reminds you that a meal is about an experience that doesn’t have to be rushed. It’s such a breath of fresh air really, in today’s age where food is all about take-out and instant gratification. Mordechai’s approach is slow and thoughtful.

Which is exactly why the book is on my nightstand. I’ve been enjoying going through it slowly, revisiting certain photographs and chapters. It’s like the whole book has a calming effect on me, reminding me of the pace of life I want to live.
